I work side by side with my apprentices, so we might spend part of a day weeding herbs, mulching berries, and helping to dry herbs and make herb teas. Because we don't use insecticides or other pesticides, you'll also learn how to go on Japanese beetle patrol, and how to prune properly to minimize insect and fungal damage. You will take part in just about every aspect of the farm operation (see details below), and by the time you finish your internship, you will have gained much of the knowledge and skills you need to start your own fruit or herb farm. The season starts in March/April and goes until late September. Ideally, a tomato plant start should be about 6 inches tall when you transplant it. But sometimes that’s just not possible. So if your tomato start is 12 inches or taller, especially if it has lost several of its lower leaves, it will benefit from this method of planting. This is because when a tomato stem is at an angle or laying down on the ground, the plant sends rooting hormones to that part of the stem, telling it to grow roots there. This allows the roots to catch up with the above-ground part of the plant, and results in your plant growing faster and healthier than if you had planted it straight up. So even though it may feel odd to bury half of your plant, that’s exactly what you should do! Your plant will thank you, and reward you with many more tomatoes than it would have otherwise. How to plant your tall tomato start: Dig a trench with one end deeper than the other. Carefully peel away the coir or peat pot, keeping your hand around the potting soil and roots. Lay the plant down in the trench with the root ball in the deep end, and only the top 6 inches or so above ground. Cover the root ball and stem with soil and press down gently but firmly so that you don’t crack the underground stem. Do not try to bend the above-ground portion to a vertical position. It will seek the sun and grow straight up within a day or two on its own.
